Multi-Engine Rating Curriculum

Multi-Engine Training FAQ

How many hours does the multi-engine rating take?

The FAA sets no minimum training time for a multi-engine class rating add-on (14 CFR 61.63(c)). You train to proficiency. In practice most pilots take somewhere around 10 to 15 flight hours, depending on your existing certificates and how current you are. Instrument-rated pilots with strong IFR skills often finish on the shorter end.

Do I need an instrument rating before getting my multi-engine rating?

No. Under 14 CFR 61.63(c) you can add a multi-engine class rating to your private or commercial certificate without holding an instrument rating. If you already hold one, your checkride will include the instrument tasks so that your instrument privileges extend to multi-engine aircraft. Most pilots who plan to fly twins in real-world conditions pursue both.

What aircraft does CFTAR use for multi-engine training?

What does the multi-engine checkride cover?

The practical test begins with an oral exam covering systems, aerodynamics, performance and emergency procedures, followed by a flight covering normal and abnormal operations, engine-out procedures and a Vmc demonstration. If you hold an instrument rating, the test also includes engine-out work by reference to instruments and a single-engine instrument approach.

Can I fly passengers with a multi-engine rating added to my private certificate?

Yes. A multi-engine rating on your private certificate lets you act as pilot in command of multi-engine airplanes and carry passengers, provided you meet the 90-day passenger-carrying currency requirement in the same category and class (14 CFR 61.57(a)) and hold any required endorsements, since most training twins are complex airplanes under 14 CFR 61.31(e). Note that multi-engine currency is separate from your single-engine currency. Flying for compensation requires a commercial certificate with multi-engine privileges.
